DOG Name: DELIA
Team Since: 2018
Samantha is a retired Deputy Sheriff for Brunswick County, North Carolina. She was always known to have a happy, loving and caring personality, and always had a smile on her face. In 2010, she was involved in a horrific car accident, after which she had to re-learn how to function and live again. She was later diagnosed with PTSD as a direct result of the accident; however, she decided to push through her diagnosis and return to work because she loved her job.
In January 2014 she responded to a life-altering call, and the memory of what she witnessed on that one day has stuck with her every day. She tried to go about life and work, as usual, but the flashbacks and nightmares became too much until she made the ultimate decision to retire from her duties after 11 dedicated years. She now feels like a recluse in her own home, suffers from panic attacks when she does go out, and experiences debilitating flashbacks. Samantha hopes that an Assistance Dog will give her the confidence she was lacking to truly live again, and enjoy every moment with her family!
In October 2018, Samantha met DELIA, a delightful Golden Retriever, and the bond grew instantly. DELIA will help Samantha by anchoring to her anxiety, waking her from nightmares, and paying attention when they are out in public. She will also cuddle Samantha during stressful counseling sessions, helping to comfort her as she processes her memories. With DELIA by her side, we know Samantha will be able to enjoy life again, and we can’t wait to see the wonderful things this team will accomplish!
