ADFC

The purpose of the paws4peopleTM Assistance Dog Fundraising Campaign (p4pADFC) is to raise funds for:

  • The acquisition of high quality dogs capable of being trained to perform within the paws4peopleTM mission.
  • Comprehensive K-9 training programs (generally between 18 - 24 months).
  • All veterinary care.
  • Routine maintenance (i.e. food, equipment, supplies, etc.).
  • Program management and supervision of the private placement appli-Campaign cation, vetting and selection processes.
  • Program management and supervision of staff trainers and K-9 training programs.
  • Management and supervision of the post-private placement recipient requirement and K-9 utilization.
  • Management and supervision of the post-private placement K-9 annual refresher training and recertification programs.

These specially trained Assistance Dogs will provide services to, and/or be personally placed with individuals with physical, neurological, psychiatric and/or emotional disabilities.

The paws4peopleTM ADFC is being conducted under the auspices and direct management of paws4peopleTM, Inc., which is classified by the IRS as a public charity with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status under US Code section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). The paws4peopleTM, Inc. EIN is: 54-1948479; its most current IRS DLN is: 17053274781095. [ www.paws4people.org ]

The primary mission of paws4peopleTM is to enhance the lives of special and regular education students, seniors, and the seriously ill or disabled, by utilizing the “Special Powers” of canine companionship displayed by highly trained Assistance Dogs; including Service Dogs, Educational Assistance Dogs, Rehabilitative Assistance Dogs, and Social Therapy Dogs in specialized educational, private placement and therapeutic visitation programs.

To accomplish the training aspects required by this mission, the paws4peopleTM K-9 Training Institute (KTI) was established. KTI is an operational division of paws4peopleTM, Inc. KTI manages the “whelping box to retirement” training programs for all paws4peopleTM Assistance Dogs, and establishes and manages the K-9 training and certification of all paws4peopleTM Staff and K-9 Trainers. [ www.KTI.paws4people.org ]

To receive a paws4peopleTM Assistance Dog, an extensive, time-consuming application, vetting and selection process must be completed. Once these processes have
been completed and an individual has been selected, that individual is referred to as a Private Placement Candidate (PPC).

KTI will train the following types of dogs within the paws4peopleTM ADFC program:

[Note: A specific dog may qualify for, and be trained in one or more of the following K-9 training programs. Dogs that cannot meet the training requirements for the following types of Assistance Dogs hall be placed into either the Social-Therapy, Shelter/Rescue or Community Dog programs.]

SERVICE DOG: A KTI Service Dog is an Assistance Dog specially trained to enable individuals with disabilities to lead more independent lives by performing three or more tasks that the person otherwise could not do, or would have extreme difficulty doing for him/herself. The Private Placement Candidates (PPC) for these dogs are generally confined to a wheelchair as a result of a mobility related disability, or have some other type of severe disability resulting from a physiological or neurological cause.

These dogs are trained within KTI’s Service Dog Training Program and typically begin training at 3-8 weeks of age and are generally placed when they are 22-26 months old.

EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE DOG: A KTI Educational Assistance Dog (EAD) is an Assistance Dog specially trained to perform inside the special and/or regular education classrooms of a school as a part of an Animal-Assisted Instructional Program.  These dogs assist teachers in performing their duties using a new educational tool – the dog. The dog provides motivation for the students to learn, which dramatically increases the teacher’s productivity and effectiveness. These dogs must be able to handle classroom and special education environments, as well as be able to work with students having all types of physical, neurological, psychiatric, emotional disabilities and/or behavioral problems.

Due to the complexities and very unique environmental differences between different types of classrooms and their students, four distinct subcategories have been established to differentiate the working environment in which EADs are trained and thereby certified to work within a school. These subcategories are:

Regular Education Classroom Dog - A classroom which contain a 95% or higher composition of non-special education students.

Special Education Classroom Dog - A classroom which contains special education students, who are NOT classified as “Severe and Profound.”

Severe and Profound Special Education Classroom Dog - A classroom which contains one or more special education students who are classified as “Severe and Profound.”

Behavioral/ Emotional Disorder Classroom Dog - A classroom which contains one or more students who have been identified with a specific behavioral or emotional disorder. These classes are generally lead by Guidance Counselors, Therapists, or other specially trained teachers.

All of these dogs are trained within KTI’s Educational Assistance Dog Training Program. They typically begin training at 3-8 weeks of age and are generally placed when they are 18-22 months old.

REHABILITATIVE ASSISTANCE DOG: A KTI Rehabilitative Assistance Dog (RAD) is an Assistance Dog specially trained to work with therapists treating patients suffering from physical or psychological trauma, or are assigned to specific individuals who suffer from neurological, psychiatric or emotional disabilities, to include Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Due to the many different applications for a RAD, three distinct subcategories have been established to differentiate the working environments in which a RAD may be employed. These subcategories are:

Professional / Rehabilitative Assistance Dog – A P/RAD is permanently assigned to a mental health therapeutic professional (i.e. clinical therapist, psychiatrist, etc.) or a physical therapeutic professional (i.e. occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech pathologist, animal therapist, etc), and works directly with this professional in the treatment of the professional’s patients/clients. This professional MUST also be a certified P/RAD handler.

A P/RAD may work within a variety of facilities:

Medical Rehabilitative Services Facility: This type of P/RAD assists its handler in the conduct of the handler’s specific medical or therapeutic interaction(s) with their patients. [Note: A P/RAD that works within this type of facility must be specifically certified to work within this type of facility, and must also be a certified EAD provided the facility houses persons under the age of 16).]

Residential/High Risk Mental Health Treatment Facility: This type of P/RAD assists its handler in the conduct of the handler’s specific medical or therapeutic interaction(s) with their patients. [Note: A P/RAD that works within this type of facility must be specifically certified to work within this type of facility, and must also be a certified EAD (provided the facility houses persons under the age of 16).]

Public or Private School: This type of P/RAD assists its handler in the conduct of the handler’s specific medical or therapeutic interaction(s) with their students/patients. [Note: A P/RAD that works within this type of facility must be specifically certified to work within this type of facility, and additionally must be a certified EAD.]

Correctional Institution: This type of P/RAD assists its handler in the conduct of the handler’s specific medical or therapeutic interaction(s) with their inmate patients. [Note: A P/RAD that works within this type of facility must be specifically certified to work within this type of facility.]

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Rehabilitative Assistance Dog – A PTSD/RAD is permanently assigned to a specific individual who has been diagnosed with PTSD as a treatment methodology. [Note: The placement of a PTSD/RAD is a very complex process calling for the utmost care. Placement decision criteria include: the level of training, type and size of dog, etc., the PPC’s propensity for violence, level of withdrawal, physical condition - possible/potential need for a Service Dog, age, etc. All of these factors must be taken into account prior to the selection, training and/or placement of a PTSD/RAD. Extensive coordination between ALL members of the PPC’s treatment team must also be taken into account prior to any placement determination.]

Private Placement / Rehabilitative Assistance Dog – A PP/RAD is permanently assigned to a specifically selected family, which has a family member suffering from neurological, psychiatric, and/or emotional disabilities (does not include PTSD), for whom a PP/RAD can provide service, therapeutic intervention, comfort and/or companionship.

These dogs are trained within KTI’s Rehabilitative Assistance Dog Training Program. They typically begin training at 3-8 weeks of age and are generally placed when they are 18-22 months old.

SOCIAL-THERAPY DOG: A KTI Social-Therapy Dog is a dog that is trained to perform at the intermediate obedience level (or higher) and is used to visit residents of nursing homes, hospitals and/or Hospice facilities. Their sole mission is to bring a sense of joy and happiness to those they meet during such visitations.

All of these dogs are trained within KTI’s Social-Therapy Dog Training Program. They typically are in training for 4-12 months, depending upon the dog’s source of origin and training requirements.

KTI currently operates K-9 training programs at the following location:

US Penitentiary - Hazelton
Bruceton Mills, WV
Secure Female Facility (SFF) [Medium Security]
Satellite Camp [Minimum Security- Men] [Pending Program Initiation]

The paws4peopleTM ADFC is the public awareness and fundraising mechanism which shall be utilized by all Private Placement Candidates selected to receive a paws4peopleTM Assistance Dog.

Unlike many other Assistance Dog training programs, paws4peopleTM does NOT charge their PPCs a fee for the Assistance Dog. Instead, paws4peopleTM requires each PPC to conduct a Public Awareness Campaign [PAC]. This PAC serves several purposes:
